“Let your hearts be like wide open doors…” – these words marked the beginning of Polina Vita’s song “Now”, which she posted on Facebook. The session video, in which the 23-year-old sings an appeal for peaceful solidarity in our turbulent times, has reached nearly 900,000 views. A surprising success? On the one hand, yes. After all, the Hamburg-native singer has just published her own single “Tricks” and her debut EP “Tricks” on fall of 2017. On the other hand, Polina has knowingly worked for this moment for a long time; 15 years, to be precise.
As young as eight years of age, I knew that I wanted to make music and be successful when I arrived in Germany”, recounts the native Belorussian. “But how? When you don’t have rich parents, you have to work for everything yourself.” And that is precisely what she did:
At 13 years of age, she came across a scholarship for a theatre and vocal training school for youths at the Stage School. She has been singing her own self-written songs on stage since she was 17. At 18 years of age, she began working as a songwriter for Hamburg-base Boogie Park Studios and has since then written songs for and alongside many different artists such as American R&B singer Truth Hurts or Parisian Joachim Pastor. Her voice and writing talent is also valued by Kontor Records’ production environment – and she is even becoming the talk of the town abroad: In May 2017, MTV Portugal published a song by Polina and Portuguese star DJ Pedro Cazanova. Most recently, she handled the background and chorus parts on the new albums of both big German superstars, Helene Fischer and Udo Lindenberg
It’s quite crazy, right? When viewed from the outside: yes. On the other hand, Polina already learned from an early age that having the right attitude makes a lot of things possible: “You simply have to believe in it and create positive thoughts, then that positivity will come back to you. But it is 24-hour work. You never “get off” of work, you live, eat and breathe the song. You can only do that if you love it.” And that’s what she does; the songs on the debut EP do not cast a shadow of a doubt: On “Better On My Own”, a minimalist soul pop song, her singing is as sensual as the deplorable romantic relationship, which the song is about; in “Now”, her voice takes on the lyrics‘ full depth and seriousness and forms a fascinating symbiosis with the piece’s deep-house vibe; “Tricks”, on the other hand, is cheerful reggae-pop jam where Polina’s voice sounds as gentle and playful as the Caribbean breeze on a warm summer day.
Leaving behind the first remarkable impressions she made on the Jamaican and London radio scene with her first single “Tricks”, Polina Vita moved on with her follow up single “Flame” featuring Paris based guitarist extraordinaire Haile JNO Baptiste. Since her debut single she has been busy writing and putting out records with EDM DJ duo Bodybangers and Youtube stars like notsocool (Rewinside) and Danergy. At the same time she focused on writing new songs for herself. Beginning this year, she started releasing a series of deep mood pop single tracks, out of which the current single TROUBLE is the second. In this song she reflects the tragedy of a breakup of two lovers who previously had the illusion of being soulmates.
